Do I need a British Council accredited TEFL/TESOL course?

Do I need a British Council accredited TEFL/TESOL course?

If you are looking for TEFL/TESOL courses then this article is for you. In this article, we will talk about an important nuance on which the expediency of taking courses for the right to teach English depends.

Everyone knows that the special value of any course lies in the certificate, which confirms the number of hours of study, the level of assimilation of the material, and so on. In the case of TEFL / TESOL, the success of future employment depends on a correctly issued document.

Those who seriously intend to teach others English should know that after passing the exam they will receive a certificate indicating the number of hours, the composition of the modules completed and, most importantly, with the seal of a specialized accredited center.

However, no TEFL/TESOL courses can be accredited by the British Council, so be very careful when you hear such offers.

Who are the British Council?

This is an international organization based in the UK, which is actively engaged in the promotion of the English language and the creation of international cultural ties. They create free learning resources and work in more than 100 countries to help English teachers work and thus improve the quality of education around the world.

Despite being a huge contributor to the ESL, they do not accredit TEFL/TESOL courses. Their mandate is to accredit British institutions that offer English courses, so you may have heard that this or that school is accredited by the British Council, but at the moment there is not a single course for TEFL / TESOL teachers that has accreditation from this body.

Thus, such statements from the organizers of courses for the right to teach are, at best, a marketing ploy, and at worst, a fraud.

What is the actual accreditation?

However, courses after which you can go abroad and teach must be accredited, otherwise the certificate will not be legally valid. Let's see which organizations are eligible.

There are several organizations - ODLQC, Pearson and ACCRIN. Certificates that are certified by these centers are quoted all over the world, are highly valued in resumes and are recognized by the administrations of foreign educational institutions.

However, in any case, before making your choice, conduct an independent investigation, read student reviews, evaluate their career improvements after the courses, request official confirmation of cooperation with the accreditation center.
